How to write a cover letter for a job in Ghana

A cover letter (also called an application letter) tells the employer why you want this job and why you're a good fit. A short, specific letter is much stronger than a long, general one.

A simple structure

  • ✓Your contact details and the date, then the employer's name and address if you know them.
  • ✓A clear subject line, for example: "Application for the position of Accounts Officer".
  • ✓Opening: the job you're applying for and where you saw the advert.
  • ✓Middle: two or three of your strongest points that match the job ad, with examples.
  • ✓Closing: thank them, say you'd welcome an interview, and sign off with your name.

Match it to the job ad

Pick the most important requirements from the advert and show how you meet each one. If the ad asks for experience with customers, give an example of when you served or helped customers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • ✓Sending the same letter to every employer.
  • ✓Repeating your whole CV instead of picking your best points.
  • ✓Writing more than one page.
  • ✓Getting the company name or job title wrong.
  • ✓Begging or overly long praise of the company. Be polite, confident and brief.
