How to tailor your CV to a job advert

Employers want to see quickly that you fit their job. A CV that uses the same words and puts the right experience first gets noticed. Here is how to tailor your CV for each application.

Step by step

  • ✓Read the job ad and underline the main requirements: skills, experience, qualifications.
  • ✓Rewrite your profile so it speaks to this job.
  • ✓Move your most relevant experience and achievements to the top.
  • ✓Use the same words as the advert where they're true for you, for example "stock control" instead of "managing goods".
  • ✓Remove points that don't help for this job, so the important ones stand out.
  • ✓Check your CV and cover letter for spelling, and save as PDF unless the ad asks for Word.

Be honest

Tailoring means presenting your real experience in the way that best fits the job. Never add skills, jobs or qualifications you don't have: employers check, and it can cost you the job later.
